“If the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves a drug, it’s safe, right? It’s not like heroin or anything. Doctors prescribe medicines because they help, not hurt. So isn’t it logical that if I take prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications recreationally, it’s not too dangerous?”

NOPE. With a capital NO. So before you consider dabbling in the legal drugs — the ones you get at your local drug store — get the facts. They are only safe if used as intended. (Prescription drugs are drugs prescribed by a doctor or other health care provider, and over-the-counter includes medicines found in any pharmacy, like cough syrup, diet pills, vitamin supplements, and herbal remedies.)
