Commuters’ needs often go unmet, but that’s usually because the college administrators don’t see commuters often enough to hear what they want. That’s what a Commuter Student Association is for, and if your college doesn’t have one, start one yourself.

Look in your student handbook, on the website, or ask at the Student Information Center to find the official process for starting a club. You’ll probably need to fill out a form and get it approved by an administrator in order to be officially registered as a bona fide on-campus organization.

Call the registrar’s office, tell them you’re starting a CSA, and ask them for a list of all the commuter students at your school. Or ask your professors if they know of any commuter students in their other classes, and if so, get a list of their names.

Send all commuter students an e-mail letting them know you’re starting a CSA, and ask them if morning, afternoon, or evening meetings would be best for them. Also, ask them what they’d like the CSA to accomplish, be it better parking information, apartment listings/job listings and road condition information on the website, or a list-serv where commuters can connect with each other.

Secure a meeting room on campus (ask how to do this at your Student Information Center) for your first CSA meeting. Send an e-mail to all commuter students letting them know when and where the meeting will be. Give flyers announcing the first meeting to all faculty and ask them to post them in their classrooms. Set up a table in the student center. Put flyers on all cars in the commuter parking lot.

Bring cookies or something yummy to the first meeting. This is optional—but it never hurts to lure ‘em in with free food!
