What to Do if You Are Raped or Sexually Assaulted

Whether or not you were drunk when the assault occurred, remember that it is not your fault. If the incident occurred within the last 24-72 hours:

Call the police and file a report. You may need to go in to the station to do this, or you may be directed to go to the hospital emergency room for an examination.
If possible, do not shower, bathe, eat or drink before you are examined. Bring a change of clothes with you to the hospital because the police will need to keep the clothes you were wearing during the assault as evidence.

Ask to speak to a rape crisis counselor or social worker, who will inform you about counseling services that are available to you.

Even if you decide not to press charges, it is still extremely important that you be examined by a doctor. You may have contracted a sexually transmitted disease from your attacker for which you should receive immediate treatment.

If the incident occurred recently or long ago, you can still get help.

Ask a school counselor about support groups on campus for survivors of sexual assault.

If you're not comfortable seeking help on campus, look in your telephone directory to find other support groups in your area. You can also call RAINN (Rape and Incest National Network) at 800-656-4673 for a victims services office near you.
