Sure, the war against the trafficking of illicit drugs from Colombia and other countries goes on. But there’s a new drug battle we’re facing, and it’s cropping up right from your local pharmacy. It’s called pharming, and it’s a serious problem where students use drugs like Ritalin, Xanax, and OxyContin for purposes other than what they’re prescribed for. You may have heard about kids who aren’t ADHD using Ritalin— they crush the pills and snort the powder to get a cocaine-like high. Over time, abusing Ritalin can cause paranoia, anxiety, irregular heartbeat, headaches, and even hallucinations. Students get their hands on these drugs by buying them from the people who do have prescriptions, by stealing them, or even by robbing pharmacies. The problem is of such growing concern as a public safety hazard that the government is looking into ways to put doctors and pharmacists under stricter standards when it comes to administering prescription drugs.
