The latest star on the drug scene? OxyContin, a.k.a. Oxy, Oxycotton, Oxy 80 or OC. Here’s some stuff you may not know:

OxyContin’s active ingredient is oxycodone, (a legal prescription pain killer used to treat cancer patients who are in terminal pain), which has been on the market since the 1960’s under brand names including Percodan and Percocet.

The effects of Oxy are a lot like morphine, which is highly addictive. When you abuse Oxy, you develop a tolerance to its effects-meaning you’ve got to take higher and higher doses in order to get the same kind of high. This leads to addiction.

It comes in tablets, capsules, and liquid form.

OxyContin is in the same family of drugs as heroin.

To get high on Oxy, people chew pills, crush them to powder and snort it, or mix the powder with water and inject it. OxyContin, when used correctly, is a time release medication so when the drug is taken crushed, too much of the substance enters the blood stream too quickly. This can lead to overdose.
