Here's what to do in the event that a friend of yours overdoses:
Watch out for the signs: Abnormal breathing, slurred speech, lack of coordination, slow or rapid pulse, low or high body temperature, big or small pupils, a reddish face, heavy sweating, drowsiness, delusions and/or hallucinations, unconsciousness.
Don’t be afraid to call for help. You may be worried you’ll get your friend in trouble (or if you’re on something, too, you may be afraid YOU’LL get in trouble), but be real: someone’s life is at stake. You MUST do something. Deal with the consequences, if any, later. Otherwise you’ll be dealing with the guilt for the rest of your life. Do not take any chances— call 911 for an ambulance. And call your Campus Security or Campus Police.
Another good number to have around is the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. You will be automatically connected to the center nearest you.
If your friend suddenly becomes hostile or violent, be careful. Keep talking to him or her calmly. Call the police if you really can’t handle the situation. If you’re really scared, go to another room and lock the door until the police get there.
